On Friday, officials have informed that the government is strictly monitoring over 9.45 lakh people in its community surveillance programme for suspected coronavirus cases.

Dr Sujeet Singh, Director, National Centre for Disease Control said that through continuous efforts, they have kept approximately 9 lakh people, who could have been possibly infected with coronavirus, through observation, which is based on data collected from 734 districts. The collected data is effectively analyzed by epidemiological intelligence.

NCDC operates the government’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. It is at the centre of various coronavirus related activities such as contact tracing, observation, network management and data management.

Dr Sujeet Singh highlighted that the surveillance is a “key weapon” which is used in battling against coronavirus, as they neither have a vaccine nor any effective course of treatment. One of the main weapons in managing the virus is through community surveillance.
